MATERIALS

  • Egg
  • Soy wax (at least 80 milliliters per egg)
  • Wax dye
  • Short candle wick (approximately 7 centimeters tall; 1.3 centimeters base)

EQUIPMENT

  • Thumb tack
  • Ceramic egg holder (optional; or empty egg carton)
  • Melting pot
  • Saucepan
  • Long handled spoon
  • Candy or deep fry thermometer

METHOD

Step 01.

Carefully push a thumb tack into the top of the egg to make a hole through the shell.

Step 02.

First, gently pierce a small hole at the top of each egg using a thumbtack. Once you’ve made the initial hole, angle the thumbtack inside the egg to widen the opening slightly. Continue this process until the hole is large enough to accommodate the candle wick.

Next, break up the egg yolk inside each egg using a wooden skewer. This will make it easier to empty the contents of the egg into a bowl or frying pan.

After emptying the eggs, rinse the inside of the eggshells with warm, soapy water to clean them thoroughly. Cover the hole with your finger and shake the eggshell to ensure it’s properly rinsed. Repeat this rinsing process several times.

Once cleaned, allow the eggshells to dry upside-down overnight.

Repeat these steps for however many eggshells you need for your candles.

Once the eggshells are completely dry, place them back in an empty egg carton or holder until you’re ready to fill them with wax and wicks for your candles.

Step 03.

Measure a generous amount of wax, approximately 80 milliliters, into a melting pot for each egg candle you plan to make. For larger eggs, use around 120 milliliters instead, ensuring you have enough wax for each egg.

Add a small piece of wax dye to the melting pot to achieve a pastel-colored candle. Start with a tiny amount, as you can always add more for a richer color.

Fill a pot with about 2.5 to 5 centimeters of water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a simmer.

Place the melting pot into the boiling water and allow the wax to melt completely, stirring occasionally.

Check the temperature of the wax with a thermometer and ensure it reaches 80 degrees Celsius.

Remove the melting pot from the heat. If you wish to add scent to your candles, do so now and stir gently for 2 to 3 minutes to distribute the fragrance evenly.

Allow the wax to cool to a temperature between 45 to 50 degrees Celsius before pouring it into the eggshells.

Step 04.

To remove the shell from the egg, use the back of a regular tablespoon.

Gently tap the eggshell with the back of the spoon to break it. Apply enough force to crack the shell without denting the candle inside. It may take some trial and error to find the right balance of pressure.

Carefully peel away the shell from the egg, ensuring not to damage the candle. Use a paper towel to wipe off any remaining shell residue.

Repeat these steps for each egg candle.

Before burning the candles, trim the wicks to approximately 6 millimeters in length. This will help the candles burn more evenly.
